Title IX and gender problems were hot topics during the Republican National Convention last week. The Title IX amendments were brought up by a number of speakers, who denounced the modifications as harmful to women and women’s sports. “We will keep men out of women’s sports, ban taxpayer funding for sex change surgeries, and stop taxpayer-funded schools from promoting gender transition, reverse Biden’s radical rewrite of Title IX Education Regulations, and restore protections for women and girls,” stated the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) platform prior to the convention.
In addition, the RNC eliminated any mention of same sex marriage from its updated platform, therefore removing their stance entirely for this issue. Charles T. Moran, the president of the Log Cabin Republicans, an organization dedicated to LGBT conservatives and their allies , has praised this adjustment on X. According to Moran, the platform change is a victory for the LGBTQ+ community.
The changes to Title IX have seen scrutiny from many different groups including the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). The NWLC made complaints against the Cobb County School District, saying that they were censoring books that showed LGBTQIA+ people and people of color, which is against Title IX and Title VI.
The Department of Education announced the final Title IX rules on April 19, 2024 and they are set to go into effect on August 1.
As that date draws nearer, Title IX changes continue to be a contentious subject across the country.
