A Cobb County grand jury has returned an indictment against a former sheriff’s deputy, who prosecutors say misled the public to receive funds under false pretenses.
District Attorney Sonya F. Allen announced that 38-year-old Mark Ryan Hampton, a former deputy with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, is facing charges for allegedly fabricating a multiple sclerosis diagnosis in order to solicit financial support through fundraising and gifts. Hampton has been formally charged with Violation of Oath by a Public Officer and Violation of Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.
The indictment stems from an investigation that began in November 2021, after the Sheriff’s Office received multiple complaints tied to a social media account believed to be associated with Hampton. He was arrested on June 13, 2022.
Authorities allege Hampton claimed to be suffering from serious health issues to gain sympathy and financial contributions from individuals and organizations. He had worked as a sheriff’s deputy for five years before the investigation began.
While the amount of money collected and the number of alleged victims were not disclosed, District Attorney Allen emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that Hampton’s actions undermined public trust.
