As people continue to attempt to understand the impact of the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ that President Donald Trump signed into law on July 4th, pro-life supporters have hailed the passage of the bill as a major victory for their cause.
While funding for abortion services is already blocked under the Hyde Amendment, pro-life advocates have long pointed out that money used by organizations that provide abortions like Planned Parenthood is fungible, meaning that any taxpayer funds provided to Planned Parenthood indirectly fund abortions.
A provision in the Big Beautiful Bill aims to cut off abortion funding, direct, and indirect, by prohibiting Medicaid funding for any health care provided by Planned Parenthood for one year.
Pro-life activists were quick to celebrate the victory on social media, celebrating the prospect of completely defunding Planned Parenthood for the first time.
National Right to Life, the largest pro-life organization in the United States by membership, lauded President Trump for defunding Planned Parenthood in the Big Beautiful Bill.
“President Trump has once again delivered on his promise to protect the most vulnerable among us,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “With his signature on the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill,’ the flow of taxpayer dollars into the multibillion-dollar abortion industry will be halted for one year.”
While pro-life groups were quick to celebrate the provision, progressive organizations such as the Center for American Progress condemned it, claiming it ‘endangers’ women’s reproductive health.
Just three days after the bill’s passage, a district judge blocked the provision defunding Planned Parenthood, claiming it violated Planned Parenthood’s First Amendment right to advocate for and provide abortion services.
