Dr. Chavonda Mills has been named the new Senior Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs/Provost at Georgia Gwinnett College. Her appointment, announced by President Dr. Jann L. Joseph, took effect April 1st.
Mills had served in the role on an interim basis since 2024 following the retirement of Dr. George Low. During that time, she launched new initiatives like the Distance Learning Taskforce and an AI Taskforce, and improved communication between faculty and administration.
She also worked with University System of Georgia schools to create transfer agreements, helping students continue their education more easily. On campus, she helped bring academic support and library services into student housing.
As provost, Mills will oversee GGC’s five academic schools and the campus library. She’ll also manage academic support and student resources, reporting directly to the college president.
“I’m honored and excited to have been offered the opportunity to continue serving at GGC,” Mills said. She emphasized her focus on student success, both in school and after graduation.
Before becoming interim provost, Mills was dean of the School of Science and Technology. She helped boost enrollment and started new programs like fermentation science and cybersecurity.
Originally from Decatur, Mills previously spent 15 years in leadership roles at Georgia College and State University. She holds degrees from Georgia Tech, Spelman College, and Florida A&M University. Mills has received national awards for her research and holds a patent for work on flavonoids related to Alzheimer’s, cancer, and HIV.
