Former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29th at the age of 100, will lie in repose at The Carter Center in Atlanta until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7th. Visitors may come at any time, day or night, to pay their respects to the 39th president of the United States and Georgia native.

Attendees are advised to plan ahead due to specific access restrictions. There is no parking available at The Carter Center but visitors may use free shuttle services provided by MARTA from the King Memorial station. However, there is also no public parking at King Memorial so individuals should plan to park at another MARTA station with parking facilities and ride the train to King Memorial. Shuttles operate every 3 to 5 minutes around the clock.

Bicycles are permitted, and racks are available on-site, but bike owners are encouraged to bring a lock, as The Carter Center is not responsible for theft or damage. Furthermore there is no designated rideshare drop-off location nearby.

Visitors should dress warmly and prepare for potential wait times. While the screening area is under a large tent, it lacks heating. The Carter Center has already welcomed 10,000 visitors in the past day as Georgians pay their respects to the Peach State’s only President.

To ensure security, strict rules regarding personal items are in place. Bags, backpacks, umbrellas, and items such as firearms, explosives, thermal containers, and selfie sticks are prohibited. Visitors should also expect thorough security checks, including the use of hand-held scanners.

Photography and video recording are not allowed inside The Carter Center, but attendees can sign a guestbook outside the center and collect a remembrance card.

Those wishing to attend are encouraged to act promptly, as this opportunity to pay tribute to President Carter will end tomorrow morning at 6:00am, when he begins his journey to Washington, D.C.
