A tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder left four dead and nine others injured this morning, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Authorities have confirmed that the alleged shooter is a 14-year-old student at the school, identified as Colt Gray. Gray was taken into custody at the scene.
Among the victims, two teachers and two students were killed, though the GBI has not released their names or provided additional details on the victims. The school, located roughly 40 miles northeast of Atlanta, was placed on lockdown during the incident before officials gave the all-clear, allowing students to reunite with their families.
Grady Memorial Hospital confirmed that one victim from the school had been admitted with gunshot injuries. The status of the other injured individuals remains unclear.
Governor Brian Kemp issued a public statement saying, “Marty, the girls, and I are heartbroken by today’s tragedy at Apalachee High School. This is a day every parent dreads, and Georgians everywhere will hug their children tighter this evening because of this painful event. We continue to work closely with local, state, and federal partners to many any and all resources available to help this community on this incredibly difficult day and in the days to come.”
In light of the events, Apalachee High School will remain closed for the rest of the week. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
